A few boats ventured out to the Gulf Stream over the last few days & we have some encouraging reports.

Capt. Drew on "Sea-Ker" went Saturdau & got 3 Wahoo, with the largets around 35 lbs.

Capt. Mel on "Mara III" went on Friday & really did well with 11 Wahoo with the largest close to 50 lbs.....

The question is did you call it in Mel!!!!

Fishing report
Articlescapt_ed writes:
Capt Ed steered the LieAbility out about 35 miles on July 1. Aboard were Barry Martin and his son Jeff as well as Capt Ed's son Lee from Tennessee. The object was to get a few grouper for the Fourth of July fish tacos.  The weather was beautiful and the sea was calm as we watched the sunrise over Masonburo Island. The bait was live Pinfish, frozen squid, cigar minnows, and Boston Mackerel; we were leaving nothing to chance. Our first drop was slow with an undersized grouper after about ten minutes, so we moved about another mile out. Then the action started and never slowed; we had one triple hook up and with four people fishing on a 24 foot boat - that is always a lot of fun.

All too soon we had our limit of nice red grouper and had released several with zero mortality. I now put the undersized grouper in the live well for a few minutes after deflating their bladder. This seems to allow them time to decompress completely. Another trick is to plunge them into the water head first as deeply as you can.  We all need to try to save the life of every one of our by-catch. Starting last year I use nothing but circle hooks. Circle hooks save many a bottom fish by hooking them in the corner of the jaw instead of deep in their stomach. The circle hook appears to hook grouper better than the J-hook because of the groupers aggressive turn and run bite. You can also de-hook fish faster allowing you more fishing time.

Tight lines to everyone.

Fishing Report April 18
Newscapt_ed writes:
Friday morning we headed out of CBI for the Tower and some grouper, but I was looking hard at that big temperature break at the Steeples.

Seas were sloppy and the wind was a whistling and I could not find a grouper at the Tower, so I motored on out to that Steeples temperature break about 1030. The chicken dolphin and football blackfin were there. We had a couple of triples on the dolphin and that is always fun when only two people are in the boat. Hooked one tuna on the long line with a Penn 50 and he was not big enough to set the drag off, so we (unknowingly) trolled him until some thing a lot bigger bit him in half. Finished up the day with a nice blackfin as we were trolling west and came home with a few dolphin and tuna plus one nice King.

A fun day, but a little wet going out; but who cares as long as you get some fish! Water temperature was 74.9 and most of the bites were on dark colors, 11:00 until 2:00 was the best bite.

The Blessing of the Fleet

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Join the Cape Fear Bluewater Fishing Club

for its Annual Boat Parade & “Blessing of the Fleet”!

Boats of all sizes and shapes welcome!   Open to all boating enthusiasts!

Boats will line up at 10:30am in the Intercoastal waterway near Sea Path Marina.  The parade will move down Mott’s Channel and past Seapath Marina, where each boat will be “blessed” for the coming fishing and boating season.  Boats will be on Channel 69.

History of the Blessing of the Fleet………

The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition dating back to ancient Italy and even biblical times.  At the beginning of the fishing season, the fishing fleet would gather to honor those who have lost their lives at sea, to seek safe passage to and from port and to ask God for abundant catches.  It was a time of reflection and great festivity for the fishermen, their families and their communities.

Today, many communities all over the world celebrate their commercial and recreational fishing and boating fleets with a Blessing of the Fleet.    The Cape Fear Bluewater Fishing Club is proud to bring this tradition to the boating enthusiasts of Southeastern North Carolina.
